La especialista explicó que “las cataratas ocurren cuando el cristalino, la lente natural del ojo, pierde su transparencia con el transcurso del tiempo o en forma acelerada por otras enfermedades”.
Sus principales síntomas son: disminución de la visión, dificultad para ver en ambientes muy iluminados o a plena luz del día, encandilamiento, ver doble o fantasma por el ojo con cataratas y también ver los colores brillantes atenuados o amarillentos.
Si bien la mayoría de las cataratas por la edad se desarrollan gradualmente, existen otros casos en que se puede desarrollar más rápidamente, como en personas más jóvenes o con diabetes.
Según la OMS, alrededor de 18 millones de personas en el mundo padecen de cataratas.
“Por eso, resulta fundamental hacer los estudios de rutina. A cada persona que concurra se le asignará un médico oftalmólogo con el que tendrá una entrevista personal, a aquellos pacientes a los que se les diagnostique cataratas serán examinados bajo dilatación pupilar ese mismo día y luego se obtendrán turnos complementarios para ver el avance de su situación”, comentó Contartese.
“Una vez que se acerque a la campaña se evaluará la agudeza visual que presente el paciente con cada ojo de forma separada y se tendrá en cuenta el potencial visual de cada uno mediante la prueba del agujero estenopeico”, agregaron.
También se realizará la evaluación de la retina para descartar que no se presente ningún tipo de lesión que requiera un tratamiento concomitante, precisó.
En el caso de estar indicada la cirugía, el Clínicas cuenta con quirófanos dedicados exclusivamente a oftalmología, microscopios quirúrgicos y equipos de facoemulsificación (técnica quirúrgica especial para el tratamiento de la Catarata) de última generación.
Los médicos de la División de Oftalmología se encuentran entrenados adecuadamente en la técnica quirúrgica, ya que se realizan varias decenas de cirugías por semana.
“Es una cirugía ambulatoria, por lo que el paciente llega y a las horas ya está de nuevo en su casa. La cirugía se hace en dos momentos, ya que se opera primero un ojo y en las siguientes semanas el otro”, explicó la profesional.
