En octubre comienza la campaña nacional de vacunación contra el sarampión, rubeóla, paperas y poliomielitis

Por la resolución 1167/2022 que se publicó hoy en el Boletín Oficial, a partir del 1° de octubre y hasta el 13 de noviembre se llevará adelante la campaña nacional de vacunación contra sarampión, rubéola, paperas y poliomielitis en niñas y niños de uno a cuatro años para mantener la eliminación lograda en el país de sarampión, rubéola, síndrome de rubéola congénita, poliomielitis y controlar la parotiditis.

La finalidad de esta campaña es alcanzar una cobertura del 95 por ciento o más de la población objetivo con la aplicación de dosis adicionales al esquema nacional de la vacuna triple viral (SRP) y de la vacuna inactivada antipoliomielítica (IPV) en todo el país.

Es por eso que los servicios de salud públicos y privados deberán garantizar la vacunación contra sarampión, rubéola, paperas y poliomielitis en forma gratuita y obligatoria a toda la población objetivo, independientemente del antecedente de haber recibido estas vacunas con anterioridad o haber padecido las enfermedades. Para cumplir con este propósito, el Ministerio de Salud de la Nación proveerá de vacunas, material descartable y carnets.

La campaña se hace en un contexto en el que es necesario desarrollar acciones para sostener la eliminación de enfermedades como el sarampión. Cabe recordar que el último brote de esta enfermedad registrado en el país fue el más importante tras lograr la eliminación, se extendió por siete meses, desde agosto de 2019 a marzo 2020, período en el causó 179 casos y una muerte.

Además, el sarampión puede causar complicaciones, principalmente en niños menores de cinco años o malnutridos, tales como neumonía, convulsiones, meningoencefalitis, ceguera, retraso mental grave y trastornos degenerativos tardíos del sistema nervioso central.

En cuanto a la rubéola y el síndrome de rubéola congénita en Argentina si bien no se reportan casos autóctonos desde el año 2009, cuando una persona embarazada susceptible expuesta al virus de la rubéola padece la enfermedad durante el primer trimestre del embarazo, se produce infección fetal y síndrome de rubéola congénita en el 90 por ciento de los casos.

El Síndrome de Rubéola Congénita produce muertes fetales y neonatales y graves malformaciones en el recién nacido, causando sordera, ceguera y cardiopatías congénitas estructurales y no estructurales, así como graves trastornos de aparición tardía como diabetes o discapacidad intelectual entre otros.

Por otra parte, en los últimos años se han registrado brotes de paperas (o parotiditis) en Argentina. Se trata de una enfermedad inmunoprevenible que afecta tanto a niños como adultos, sin tratamiento específico, que provoca gran ausentismo escolar y laboral y puede causar en sus formas más graves meningitis y orquiepididimitis, pudiendo en este último caso conducir a la esterilidad permanente.

Finalmente, la Estrategia para la Fase Final de la Erradicación de la Poliomielitis 2019-2023 refleja la urgencia de erradicar la poliomielitis al haber sido declarada una emergencia de salud pública de importancia internacional en 2014. Además, la existencia de poliomielitis salvaje en distintos países del mundo hace que todos estén en riesgo de reintroducción. Es una enfermedad altamente contagiosa ocasionada por el virus de la poliomielitis y puede causar parálisis permanente.

A nivel nacional, es necesario mencionar que las coberturas del Calendario Nacional de Vacunación registran un descenso sostenido desde el año 2017, hecho que se vio agravado a partir de la pandemia de COVID-19 con caídas promedio entre 10 y 15 puntos respecto de años previos por lo cual esta campaña es fundamental.

Mantener protegidos a niños y niñas a través de la vacunación con una dosis adicional de las vacunas triple viral y antipoliomielítica es una estrategia que ha demostrado ser efectiva y segura y refuerza la importancia de sostener la vacunación como una política sanitaria prioritaria y con alto impacto en la salud de la población.
